Deutschland, Deutschland über alles

TUCHOLSKY, Kurt, and John Heartfield

TUCHOLSKY, Kurt, and John Heartfield

Amherst: The University of Massachusetts Press, 1972. 245pp; b&w illus.4to. Orange cloth; dust jacket. Fine in a very good jacket, price-clipped, with heavy sunning to spine and along front panel at left.

First English-language edition of this satirical "picture book," originally published in 1929; a collaboration between writer Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935) and photo-montage artist John Heartfield (1891-1968), which skewered both the Weimar bourgeoisie and the simmering nationalism that would soon sweep the Nazis to power. This edition "designed to convey as much as possible the spirit of the original layout," with translations from the German by Anne Halley, and an afterword and notes by Harry Zohn.
