Two crimped page corners, else about fine in a very good jacket, unclipped, with light rubbing and foxing (the latter mostly to interior) and a short closed tear at head of rear panel.

English-language translation of this 1914 novel by Japanese writer Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), a subtle study of "man's loneliness in the modern world," as translator Edwin McClellan calls it in his foreword. Adapted into Japanese-language films in 1955 and 1973 by Kon Ichikawa and Kaneto Shindo, respectively. Jacket design by Stephen Dwoskin.
