First edition of this English-language translation of this 1914 novel by Japanese writer Natsume Soseki (1867-1916); a subtle study of "man's loneliness in the modern world," as translator Edwin McClellan calls it in his foreword, which was adapted into Japanese-language films in 1955 and 1973 by Kon Ichikawa and Kaneto Shindō, respectively.
