SIMPSON, Les [Linda], ed.
NY: [My Comrade], 1987. [44]pp; b&w illus. Saddle-stapled in photo-illustrated wraps. Toning and rubbing to wraps, mild ring-stain to rear; very good.
First issue of this queer zine edited by New York drag impresario Linda Simpson; a campily anarchic celebration of queer culture at the peak of the AIDS Epidemic, as well as a time capsule of the fertile drag and gay arts scene centered around the legendary Pyramid Club. Contents include an arts roundup column by Lypsinka ("L'Artificielle"), also featured in the "Backstage with Lypsinka!" photo-profile; an interview with George Wayne, founder of arts and fashion zine R.O.M.E. (a key influence on My Comrade!); a photo series featuring drag performer Tabboo! dressed as Patty Hearst (also pictured on cover); a Spanish-language photo-comic featuring Aner Candelario and Tabboo!; the "My Comrade Centerfold" (Terrorist Hunk); etc. Heavily illustrated throughout with black-and-white illustrations, photographs, and photo-collages, along with numerous illustrated ads for local businesses. A decidedly scarce issue of an important and delightful publication. Bronson & Aarons, Queer Zines v1, pp. 162-163.
