Herm (her-him)

SEIDEN, Don

SEIDEN, Don

[Chicago]: Don Seiden, [no date; circa 1980s?]. 24 stiff white cards, 7 x 9 in., printed rectos only with drawings and reproduced holograph text; single sheet of introduction/instructions on brown paperstock. Housed in a black-papered card case. Cards with mild toning, near fine; box very good, with some wear.

A deck of cards featuring semi-abstract drawings and texts designed to challenge preconceived notions of male and female psychic forces; as described on the instruction sheet: "This group of twenty-four Herm cards represent an attempt at mediating the often separate worlds of the male and female elements which operate within the individual, as well as in our relationships with one another." Users are instructed to choose a card at random, read the title and view the drawing, seek the origin of the text in parts of the drawing, and reinterpret the meaning according to their present psychic state. Don Seiden (1927-2019) was a Chicago-based sculptor, therapist, and art educator, who in 1980 founded the Art Therapy department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A scarce work; OCLC locates two institutional holdings, at SAIC and Prescott College.
