Michael Schmidt : Berlin Nach 45

SCHMIDT, Michael

SCHMIDT, Michael

Göttingen: Steidl, 2005. First edition. 95pp; b&w plates. Oblong 4to. Blue cloth, titled in gray to front board and spine. Near fine, with mild toning to edges of leaves. Lacking the original chipboard slipcase; now protected with a custom-cut archival mylar dust jacket. A photo-series by German photographer Michael Schmidt (1945-2014), published here in its entirety for the first time: fifty-five black-and-white urban landscapes, shot in Berlin in 1980; images in which the frequent void spaces evoke the city's fractured social and architectural identity in the wake of WWII. Edited by Ute Eskildsen, with an essay by Janos Frecot. All text in German and English. An important and now uncommon work.
