Transvaluations No. 2 [Poster]

SASSOON, R. L. [Richard]; [Jim] Gulyas, illus.

San Francisco: Transvaluations Workshop, 1967. Silk-screened in purple to recto only, 20 x 14-3/16 in. Near fine, with a soft crease to bottom right corner.

Poster for a theatrical production of a play, Transvaluations No. 2 by Richard Sassoon—reportedly the second installment in a trilogy of plays, the first of which was originally staged in 1965. Illustration and lettering by Jim Gulyas, who also collaborated with Sassoon on a book, Beaubo (1967), purporting to transmit the teachings of a fictional religion known as "Beauboism." Sassoon is perhaps best known for his tempestuous early relationship with Sylvia Plath; Gulyas contributed psychedelics-tinged illustrations to a number of other Bay Area counterculture publications, including Trips 66 and Child's Hat. An attractive artifact from one of the weirder Summer of Love fringes.
