Crusoes of Sunday Island

MORTON, Elsie K.

MORTON, Elsie K.

NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 1957. First edition. 222pp; b&w plates. Textured paper over boards, mustard quarter-cloth. Light sunning to boards, toning to edges of textblock. Price-clipped dust jacket with wear and a few tiny chips at spine ends. Near fine.

Nice copy of this work of non-fiction about New Zealander Tom Bell and his family, who in 1878 settled on an uninhabited Pacific island. With eight pages of black-and-white plates depicting the island and Bell clan. The most successful book by New Zealand journalist and writer Elsie K. Morton (1885-1968). Jacket design by W. N. Wilson. This American first edition decidedly more scarce than its UK and New Zealand counterparts.
