MELLEN, Joseph

MELLEN, Joseph

[London]: Glucocracy, 1975. 49pp. Saddle-stapled in illustrated card wraps. Light soiling, toning, and creasing to wraps; a few spots of interior soiling; very good.

First edition of this counterculture memoir detailing Mellen's (b. 1939) early life, formative experiences with LSD, and decision to perform self-trepanation in an attempt to get "permanently high"—an operation he ultimately carries off after several abortive attempts. With much time spent on Mellen's friendships and drug excursions with Dutch trepanation proponent Bart Huges, British psychedelics researcher Michael Hollingshead, et al., and colorful descriptions of his adventures at the fringes of society in Ibiza, London, and elsewhere. Cover drawing by Mellen's long-time partner, Amanda Feilding. Of this first edition, OCLC locates only four institutional holdings, all in the UK.
