LORDE, Audre
LORDE, Audre
NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 1976. First edition. 70pp. Deckled fore-edge mildly toned, faint sunning at head of cloth. Else fine in a fine, price-clipped jacket with a faint interior dampstain at base of spine.
Lovely first edition copy of this collection of verse by American poet Audre Lorde (1934-1992), her first with a mainstream commercial publishing house. Lorde was angered by Norton's decision to use the rear jacket panel to advertise the work of poet Adrienne Rich, a friend whose greater success aroused a competitive streak in Lorde; though Lorde ultimately stuck with Norton, she complained about the decision to her agent, who thereafter included a contract clause requiring approval for any advertisements for other authors (De Veaux, Warrior Poet : A Biography of Audre Lorde, p.162). Jacket design by Rus Anderson.
