Sexual Freedom

GUYON, René

GUYON, René

NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1958. Reprint (first Knopf printing  apparently 1950). xiv, 34pp; index. Dark orange with stamped motif to front board and spine; dust jacket. Fore-edge foxed; minor splashing to topstain. Unclipped jacket lightly worn, with toning to spine and edges. Very good.

Reprint of the second volume in his monumental Etudes d'ethique sexuelle by French jurist and sexologist René Guyon (1876-1963); a defense of sexual non-normativity in which Guyon "attacks those social attitudes which rest on the premise that sexual acts are illegitimate" (jacket). Admired by American sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey and others, Guyon remains an influential if somewhat overlooked figure, whose work carries clear implications for later LGBTQ movements. Translated from the French by Eden and Cedar Paul, with an introduction by Norman Haire. Rear jacket flap with a positive blurb from pioneering endocrinologist Harry Benjamin, noted as an early champion of transgender rights. Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, v1, pp. 508-510.
