Es kommt der neue Fotograf!

GRÄFF, Werner

GRÄFF, Werner

Berlin: Verlag Hermann Reckendorf, 1929. First edition. 125pp; b&w plates and illus. Small 4to. Orange cloth titled in blue to front board and spine; lacking the jacket. Light wear to spine ends and tips; mild toning to leaves. Very good.

A bright, clean copy of the seminal work of the New Vision photography movement, gathering 148 representative black-and-white photographs and functioning as a sort of photo-essay, as described in The Photobook:  "It can be considered as a ‘how-to’ compendium of the new photography, and is divided into sections, each several pages long, showing either formal strategies like tilting the frame or repeating similar elements, close-ups and so on, or genres such as photograms, montage, advertising and magazine photography” (Parr & Badger, v1, 98-99). Published, along with Roh and Tschichold's Foto-Auge, around the time of the legendary Film und Foto, a 1929 photography exhibition organized in Stuttgart by Moholy-Nagy and others. All text in German.
