The Circle : A Quarterly, No. 1, January 1968

GARRISON, William E., ed; Lloyd McNeill, et al, contributors

GARRISON, William E., ed; Lloyd McNeill, et al, contributors

Washington, DC: The Circle, 1968. Six elements (detailed below) laid into a white card box, 9-3/4 x 7-1/8 inches, with color serigraph mounted to top. Most elements with light toning; else very good to near fine. Box is somewhat soiled/toned and splayed, with several splits to both top and bottom; good.

As far as we can determine, the only issue of this boxed journal of literature, photography, and art, whose contributors include jazz flutist and artist Lloyd McNeill (1935-2021), photographer Hank Leland, poet (and single-malt Scotch connoisseur) Harvey Fry, et al. Contains the following six elements, as housed in a box with a mounted Lloyd McNeill serigraph:

  • a [16]pp. pamphlet in self-wraps containing poems and texts by Bill Garrison, Bob Murray, Tom Salle, and Paul Tylor;
  • a [16]pp. pamphlet in self-wraps containing 12 black-and-white photographs by Hank Leland;
  • a [12]pp. pamphlet with mounted serigraph cover containing poems and reproduced drawings by Harvey Fry;
  • a three-color serigraph by Lloyd McNeill, 8-3/4 x 6 in;
  • a folded single sheet, opening to 11 x 17 in., containing an H. Clayton musical score written for Lloyd McNeill, titled "Hommage á Che : For: Flute Drum and Piano";
  • a 22 x 8.5-inch sheet accordion-folded to form eight panels, with four Eugene Martin drawings on one side and his name printed wide across the verso.

Though the copyright page solicits subscriptions for upcoming issues, we can find no evidence that the endeavor continued. Further, we find no information about this publication in the standard references, no copies in the trade, and no records via OCLC. An intriguing and scarce document of the DC arts scene.
