What A Witch Told Me

FRANCIS, Robert

FRANCIS, Robert

[Chautauqua, NY]: Chautauqua Writers' Workshop, 1956. [8]pp. Saddle-stapled in self-wraps, 8-1/2 x 3-3/4 in. Short splits at spine ends, wear and mild splash marks to wraps, postage stamp to rear cover. Very good.

An evocative parable by American poet Robert Francis (1901-1987) about an encounter with a woodland witch, who tells him the cryptic secret of poetry: "The secret's all in one word, same for poetry as for jam or jell. And the word, Mr. Poet, is flavor." Per a statement on front cover verso, the text was written by Francis in his role as instructor for the Poetry division of the Chautauqua Writers' Workshop, 1956, and "published by its members as a souvenir of gratitude for the exhilarating and beneficial sessions of the class." Decidedly scarce; OCLC locates only a single holding, at UMass Amherst.
