The Existential Bible : A Genesis of Creativity [Signed]

COREY, Douglas Q., and Jeannette P. Maas

COREY, Douglas Q., and Jeannette P. Maas

Honolulu: Na Pali Publishing Publishing Co., 1976. First edition. 277pp; author and subject indexes. 4to. Perfect-bound in glossy illustrated wraps. Very good, with soiling to bottom fore-edge of textblock; toning to edges of endleaves; corner wear. Inscribed, dated in year of publication, and signed by both authors to front endpaper verso.

A radical re-reading of the first 25 chapters of the Book of Genesis, along with the Book of Job. Bible verses (mostly King James) are presented next to "existential" free verse explications, each chapter concluding with a lengthy commentary drawing on sources including Jean-Paul Sartre, R. D. Laing, and Mark Twain. Corey and his second wife Maas were clinical psychologists, dedicated peace activists, and participants in a variety of counterculture movements. In the 1950s and 60s, Corey associated with many of the principal figures of the nascent psychedelics movement, including Timothy Leary. OCLC locates six institutional holdings.
