Occidental and San Francisco: Jaina A. Davis, 1992-1997. 9 vols. Between [20] and [60]pp. ea. 4to. Saddle-stapled in illustrated black-and-white (1-4) and color wraps (5-9). Light corner creasing to No. 5, else all volumes about fine. No. 6 as issued with a sheet of stickers; No. 1 also issued with a sheet of stickers, here missing.
Complete nine-issue run of this wide-ranging 1990s zine, which explored topics including pop culture, alternative music, and sexuality through a humorous and frequently feminist lens. Davis was encouraged to start the zine by Rollerderby's Lisa Carver, who appears in interviews in Nos. 1 and 3 (the latter being a discussion on the relative desirability of characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation). The majority of issues arranged around a loose theme (e.g. "Community Breast," "Cults That Matter!", "Cakes and Spankings," etc), with contributions from Davis and numerous others. Contents include articles, reader letters, fiction and poetry, zine and music reviews, etc; all heavily illustrated with photographs, drawings, and comics (including contributions from Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine); four issues with color center spreads, else entirely black-and-white. OCLC locates 10 institutions holding copies of Flatter.
