Canary : The Story of a Transsexual

CONN, Canary

CONN, Canary

Los Angeles: Nash Publishing, 1974. First edition. 335pp; 16pp. b&w plates at center. Yellow vinyl boards. Fine in a fine, unclipped ("$8.95") jacket.

An as-new copy of this transgender memoir, including an account of Conn's traumatic gender-affirming surgery in Tijuana. Born in San Antonio in 1947 as Danny O'Connor, Conn enjoyed a brief career as a musician, married and had a song, before struggling with depression and making the decision to transition at the age of 23. Conn made a number of national talk show appearances following the publication of Canary, but little record exists of her life thereafter, the latest we can find being a brief column in the February 5, 1979 issue of The Miami Herald, which notes that Conn had "just released a disco album, and moreover she's very popular out in Los Angeles as the hostess of a nightly radio talk show that supposedly is about to go into national syndication."
