BETH B
BETH B
[NY]: Beth B, 1990. Seven postcards, printed in black to rectos only. One card ("Censorship May Be Hazardous to Your Freedom") 6-1/4 x 4-1/4, the rest 6 x 4 in. Fine.
Complete set of seven "Surgeon General's Warning" postcards by New York artist and No Wave filmmaker Beth B (b. 1955). Animated by the same punk-inflected social satire that informs much of her work, the series utilizes imagery drawn from pop culture and 20th century propaganda to address such issues as AIDS, abortion, censorship, and racism. Also produced as a series of posters, which debuted over the course of seven weeks at various New York locations; reportedly, copies of the postcard versions were mailed to various religious, political, and conservative leaders. A scarce example of this ephemeral series; OCLC locates only a single holding of the postcard set, at MoMA.
