Memories of a Past and Present, Unwritten

AYDEN, Erje

AYDEN, Erje

NY: New Wave Publications, 1991. 53 leaves, printed rectos only; illus. Octavo; black plastic comb binding. Very good or better, with light toning and soiling to wraps. Signed, dated, and inscribed by Ayden on the title-page: "To Michael my comrade in arts. Best Erje Feb 23 2002."

Presentation copy of this scarce self-published memoir by Turkish-born avant-garde writer Erje Ayden (1936-2013). Despite his lifelong literary obscurity, Ayden was a close friend and confidante to a wide swath of New York writers and artists. He counted among his friends William de Kooning, whose daughter Lisa is the nominal subject of this digressive memoir, ostensibly the first chapter of a longer work. Interestingly, the copyright page directs all inquiries concerning commercial rights for this work to writer Chris Kraus, who also supplied the foreword to the 1987 Semiotext(e) reprint of Ayden's 1972 novel Sadness at Leaving. Of this title, OCLC locates only three holdings.
