Artist's books by American artist Ida Applebroog (1929-2023), one of eleven such volumes in her Dyspepsia Works series. A single image of a man poised to strike a prone woman, repeated five times, with a facing text to one page: "The sweet smell of sage enters the room." Shelley Rice, writing in Artists' Books: A Critical Anthology and Sourcebook (Visual Studies Workshop Press, 1985): "The power of Applebroog's books lies in the fact that they imply narrative but never allow a resolution; the moment of crisis pictured is simply repeated over and over and over again, like a broken record, and is thus almost unbearably attenuated throughout the book."
