Popeye : Magazine for City Boys, No. 40, October 10, 1978

Tokyo: Heibon Shuppan Co., 1978. 154pp.; illus. Quarto; saddle-stapled in publisher's illustrated wraps. Some headings in English, else all text in Japanese. Oxidation to staples; light toning to interior. Very good or better.

An early issue of this influential and long-running Japanese lifestyle magazine, founded in 1976 and still published today: a mix of pop culture and fashion aimed at urban young men—or "city boys" as the magazine's subtitle would have it—and a treasure-trove of period advertising and design. This issue with a focus on motorcycles, with numerous articles on that theme: "Bike is Time-machine," "Super Touring," "Top Fuel Drag Bike," "Bike People," and more. Also with a long article, "Scrapbook of America," presenting colorfully illustrated overviews of recent American books on relevant topics (baseball, camcorders, sneakers, magic, the American West, etc.). Plus the usual mix of film, music, book reviews, gossip, and more.
