Popeye : Magazine for City Boys, No. 38, September 10, 1978

Tokyo: Heibon Shuppan Co., 1978. 146pp.; illus. Quarto; saddle-stapled in publisher's illustrated wraps. Some headings in English, else all text in Japanese. Light soiling and wear to wraps; mild toning to interior. Near fine.

An early issue of this influential and long-running Japanese lifestyle magazine, founded in 1976 and still published today: a mix of pop culture and fashion aimed at urban young men—"city boys" as the magazine's subtitle would have it—and a treasure-trove of period advertising and design. This issue dedicated almost exclusively to its feature, "Fun Spots of America," with profiles of various amusement parks, rollercoasters, sports stadiums, tourist towns, circuses, museums, etc. A compelling issue, demonstrative of the fascination with American culture that had been a hallmark of Popeye since its conception.
