Piotr Kowalski [Inscribed]

KOWALSKI, Piotr; Jean-Christophe Bailly

KOWALSKI, Piotr; Jean-Christophe Bailly

Paris: Fernand Hazan, 1988. First edition of 2,000 copies. Quarto; 129pp; plates. Decorative papered boards with glassine jacket printed in red. Four-page "Errata et Addenda" tipped onto rear pastedown.

Very good, with light shelfwear, bumping to spine ends (short tear to paper at head of spine), and light foxing to textblock top. Jacket yellowed to spine panel, the head of which shows some minor crumpling/chipping. Very good. Though not called for, this copy has been signed, dated, and inscribed by Kowalski on the half-title.

A French-language monograph covering the output of the polymathic Polish artist, Piotr Kowalski (1927-2004), whose study of forms encompassed everything from neon to large-scale earthworks to electronics and sound equipment, as in his ambitious "Time Machine" projects. Though Kowalski studied and was later a fellow at M.I.T., his work remains somewhat underrecognized in the U.S., despite its clear affinities with other major avant-gardists of the time. Examples of Kowalski's signature are quite uncommon in the trade.
