Over the Sex Border

London: Victor Gollancz, 1963. First edition. 319pp; index. Blue textured-paper boards; gilt spine titles; dust jacket. A few light smudges to rear board; "file copy" stamped across front pastedown/jacket flap, and to rear jacket panel. Near fine in very good jacket, unclipped, with light rubbing and edgewear.

An attractive copy of what is generally considered the first serious modern study of "transsexualism," predating by three years Harry Benjamin's The Transsexual Phenomenon (1966), and particularly notable for having been written after the author's own transition. Georgina Somerset née Turtle (1923-2013) was assigned male at birth, despite having intersex characteristics. She lived the first three decades of her life as a man, pursuing a successful career as a dentist before undergoing estrogen therapy followed by gender-affirming surgery in 1957. Over the Sex Border was informed by the overwhelming amount of correspondence Turtle received after her transition became public; though well-informed by the standards of the day, and though Turtle is generally sympathetic of those struggling with gender identity, her views on trans issues are considered somewhat myopic by today's standards—particularly her insistence that physiology and chromosomal make-up were the ultimate arbiters of one's "sex." Still, an important work, uncommon in such nice condition.
