First trade edition of this book combining new stories with material drawn from Berlin's first three collections. Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1990. First edition. One of 300 unsigned hardcover trade copies (there were also 125 numbered and signed hardcovers, and 26 handbound lettered and signed hardcovers). Octavo (6.5 x 9.25 in.); 280pp.; decorative paper boards backed with blue cloth, paper spine label. Lacking the original acetate jacket, but fitted with a new archival polyester replacement.
A very good copy, with the following flaw to be noted: there is a pink dampstain affecting the base of textblock along the spine and penetrating upward into the page gutters by as much as ~1.5 in, beginning at about page 150 and growing progressively larger toward the rear of the volume. The same pages also show a shallower and more inconspicuous water stain, also along the bottom edge, growing to about 2 in. long and ¼ in. high at rear. Please see included photos. Else tight and square and clean, with moderate wear to the tops and bottoms of the boards, and what appears to be an unintentional red ink stain/bleed to the rear board.
Uncommon; this copy priced to balance relative scarcity against a more than minor but far from critical flaw.
