Eastvillage 85. A Guide. A Documentary

HAGENBERG, Roland, et al.

HAGENBERG, Roland, et al.

NY: Pelham Press, 1985. 4to. Perfect-bound in red illustrated wraps. [144]pp.; illus. Very good, with surface scratches along fore-edge of front cover. Cover drawing by Mark Kostabi.

A heavily illustrated guide to the mid-80s avant-art scene in New York's East Village. With five essays* elucidating various aspects of the scene, a section of headshots of notable figures (including David Wojnarowicz), and (the bulk of the book) full-page profiles of the neighborhood's many art galleries, including lists of their represented artists and a map at rear of their locations. Panned by the Village Voice on its release as a "high school yearbook with pictures of the cool kids," Hagenberg's guide now offers a revealing window into a vibrant cultural moment in the city's history. A second guide followed in 1986—apparently the only two produced. Scarce; OCLC locates only six holdings, including at SFMOMA and The Tate, though we also find holdings at MOMA and The Met not reflected in Worldcat.

*"Fancy Goods" by Alan Jones, "B Boys, Punks, & Fashionettes"  by Jo Shane, "Surf's Up" by Nicolas A. Moufarrege, "Innocence or Ambition" by Carlo McCormick, and "The Apocalypse of the Eastvillage"  by Michael Kohn.
