Circle Magick Songs

Alan, Jim and Selena Fox

Madison, WI: Circle Publications, 1977. First edition of 1,000 copies. Octavo; 59pp.; saddle-stapled in printed wraps. Inscribed on the title page, presumably in Fox’s hand: "Blessed be, Selena & Jim." Moderate browning to wraps, one minor ding to fore-edge of textblock, else near fine: clean, unmarked, and securely bound.

A tidy, collectible copy of what is arguably the first publicly distributed Pagan songbook, published by the founders of Circle Sanctuary, a federally recognized Wiccan church founded in 1974 and very much still active today. Fox, in particular, remains one of the most prominent and well-respected figures in contemporary Paganism, and according to the group’s website still holds positions as both president and high priestess of Circle Sanctuary.

Circle Magick Songs was the first work published under the church’s Circle Publications imprint. Though rooted in ancient traditions, all of the lyrics and music are credited to either Alan or Fox, with scores by Alan and accompanying illustrations by a half-dozen contributors. Alan and Fox’s 1978 cassette tape, Circle Magick Music, contained a selection of material from the songbook.
