Lo Spazio Letterario

Firenze, [Italy]: Igitur, 1979. [32]pp; illus. 8vo; saddle-stapled in photo-illustrated wraps. Fine.

Documentation of a 1978 conceptual performance by Italian artist Giovanni Broi, in which he fired guns at copies of his book Lo spazio letterario—a blank volume with title borrowed from Maurice Blanchot's seminal work of literary theory, L'espace littéraire (1955). Illustrated throughout with photographs of Broi, the shooting range—books somberly arrayed in caskets with target practice markings—and the ensuing biblio-carnage. A literally deconstructive experiment into the nature of reading and what it means to "open a book." With a preface by Blanchot himself. OCLC locates five holdings, only two in the U.S.
